Heavy Objects (and light movements) is a reflection of the life and work of artist and activist David Wojnarowicz (1954-1992), and also a self-portrait that studies duration, accumulated fatigue, entering and exiting periods of darkness. In this piece, dancers occupy states where difficult positions, repeated movements or movement constructs are held over several minutes or chunks of an hour and we watch the images burn into the space or melt, or inevitably dissipate. These “anatomies of disintegration” represent the weight of living and the general fatigue many feel, but then at times the overwhelming ecstasy and joy that can come from enduring and overcoming. As Martha Graham said, “the body never lies” and at points of peak weariness, it has no choice but to emit sometimes debilitating truths.
